Closest Town

Ride Destination

Moolmanshoek Private Game Reserve

This race exists to enlighten all those who think the Free State is that flat part on the N1 on your way to Cape Town. Come and challenge yourself with the unique SkyRide mountain bike race. The race’s home is in the picturesque Moolmanshoek Private Game Reserve. This unique clover leaf race runs along the Witteberg Mountain range that makes an unforgettable horse shoe that encloses the Moolmanshoek valley.

The race is hosted by the Nel family at Moolmanshoek. Apart from the race there are several hikes, bird hides, lots of game that can be viewed on horseback, or from a horse cart or from a 4×4 game viewing vehicle.

The terrain is a mountain bikers dream.  Four very distinctive peaks, make up the race as one circles the Moolmanshoek valley.  The route is not marked but very easy to navigate with the use of a GPS and downloaded routes.  The race is a combination of single track and jeep track that are just amazing to ride.

Getting There

It is very easy to get there from Johannesburg, which is about 320km by road or Durban, which is 450km by road and Bloemfontein, which is 250km by road. Very clear directions from all major centers can be got on the the Moolnmanshoek website.

Most athletes make use of the camping facilities at the Langesnek leadership centre that is part of Moolmanshoek Private game reserve.  The Lodge has 12 rooms that are superbly fitted out and ideal for those who are not into camping but still want to be part of the event.

The Event

SkyRide is arguably one of the most adventurous MTB Stage Races in South Africa where we encourage riders to appreciate their surroundings and not just having a head down dash to the finish attitude. The route is unique as it takes you on a clover leaf route around the Main Lodge, which is the hub of activities during the weekend. This event is a Family affair and the location allows us to cater for all, with a kiddie’s activities to game drives and Horseback riding for those that are not participating in the race.  This is a self-navigational race and as the route is a clover leaf style route it makes it a good event for those that are looking for something more challenging than riding a marked trail.

This is a great weekend for the entire family and the event aims to create more fun and entertainment for the entire family and is a must for your race calendar.

Because of the terrain the routes will be unmarked and teams consisting of two riders will need to navigate by means of GPS routes that will be supplied passing through CP’s (CHECK/CONTROL POINTS) on the way.

“Start slowly and make sure that you have good legs for the downhills, this is where you can make up a lot of time. Take enough water in your bladder/ bottles as there is no water on the route except for at the check points . This is a weekend family event so bring the wife and kids along you wont be disappointed.”
